The Centers' Boy Scout Troop 726

In the spring of 2009, Centers for Youth and Families established Boy Scout Troop 726 for at-risk boys, ages 11-14, who are participants of our Prevention Services’ afterschool and/or summer programs. The troop is made up of youth who may not have experienced positive role modeling nor had the opportunity to be involved in organized outdoor activities. With immense commitment from The Centers staff and genuine enthusiastic interest from the boys, the troop has had a successful and exciting first year.  An integral part of the troop's success is due to The Centers' agency board member, Mr. Alan Miller.  Mr. Miller is a seasoned troop leader and The Centers is grateful to have him leading this rewarding endeavor.

During the past year, Boy Scout Troop 726 has come together with a level of enthusiasm that has both surprised and energized Troop leaders. The Troop participated in the 2009 Boy Scout Spring Jamboree as well as the week-long Camp Rockefeller over the summer. Furthermore, Troop 726 has just returned from their first "cold weather" hiking and camping experience on Petite Jean Mountain. The troop, their leaders and volunteers hiked nine miles to the campsite, pitched their own tents, built a campfire and cooked all their meals. They returned after two nights tired but very proud of their accomplishments.

With direction from scout leaders, the boys have planned a schedule of activities for the coming year, including the Mohawk District Spring Camporee, a Spring Fishing Camp-Out, a White River Canoe Float, Devils Den Rock Climbing, and a Lake DeGray Camp-Out. And, of course, they are very excited about again attending the week-long Summer Camp.

As a result of these positive experiences, our new Boy Scouts are very excited about the prospect of continuing to be involved in the scouting program. The troop participated in their first fundraiser this fall, raising close to $800, and are planning a candy sale during the month of February.

The specific needs of Troop 726 include: assistance with the $200 Summer Camp fee for each boy, $500 for camping equipment, transportation costs, and help with the costs associated with each planned activity. Donations from the community will make it possible for The Centers to expand and enhance this special program for boys who would otherwise not have the unique opportunity to be a Boy Scout.
