A Happy Day for Many
The Centers' Parenting from Prison program is keeping families connected.
Have you read the book, Alicia's Happy Day? In this children's story, Alicia's birthday is celebrated by everyone she sees while touring her neighborhood with her mother. Shopkeepers greet her, airplanes write in the sky in her honor and taxi drivers shout birthday well wishes. This beautiful book was the feature recently of The Centers' Parenting from Prison program in conjunction with the Even Start/HIPPY program. Three year old Sara and her nine year old brother Jacob attended their first class with their father who is incarcerated at the Wrightsville unit. After reading the story together, the children drew pictures and discussed the story. The dads made taxi cabs for the kids out of paper boxes. Centers' recently received the following email from Sara and Jacob's mom: "We look forward to class again. The children had such a great time they are still talking about it. The artwork is on the refrigerator and Jacob has his dad's taxi cab in his room."Obviously this event meant a great deal to Sara and Jacob. The Centers' is glad to have been a part of this happy day!
Thanks to Marsha Vault and Katherine Downie for sharing this success story.
